New project will enable sustainable business models for robotaxis

– The challenge in creating business models for robotaxis is that there are several factors regarding, for example, standards, regulations and political aspects reaching further than the technical issues and affecting the labor market and the role of unions. This needs to be explored in order to avoid pitfalls or stop signals, says Erik Wetter at Stockholm School of Economics, project coordinator.

– The aim is to gather the strategic questions arising on top of those on traffic statistics and economic models to be able to create a strategic framework for all actors and perspectives. This will help in the development of long-term sustainable business models for a smart transport solution.

The project intends to explore in what cases a fleet of robotaxis could be an option for certain types of public transport in Sweden. In order to do so, a deeper level of understanding is needed and this could be reached by creating the mentioned strategic framework. The framework could be used by a variety of actors, like vehicle manufacturers, cities, regions, authorities and academia.

The project will carry out a case study in Gothenburg where the framework will be applied to assess different conditions and timeframes for the sustainable commercialization of robotaxis.
